Week of January 8

This week we are designing boats out of tin foil. The challenge is to hold as many pennies as possible before the boat sinks.

Week of December 11

This week is all about Christmas science! We will be make cookie cutter fizzles with baking soda and vinegar, floating cranberries in a magic liquid, mixing Christmas colors, and building gum drop towers. It will be a fun week before break!

Week of December 4

This week we will be weighing sponges. Students will use balancing scales to see how many grams the sponges weigh, both wet and dry.

Week of November 27

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!

This week we will be learning about rocks, what physical weathering means, and how it connects to the land and rocks on Earth. 

Week of November 13

This week we will be continuing to learn about water.  We will be learning about water on a slope and what it means to sink and float. 

Last week we tested water on different surfaces. We learned that water can bead up or absorb!

Week of November 7

We are starting the second trimester, which means we are now beginning Earth Science. This week we will be learning about water on different surfaces. Students will use droppers to test how water reacts on paper towels, foil, wax paper, and writing paper. 

Week of October 30

Happy Halloween week! We will be engineering bone bridges this week. Students will work in groups to collaborate how to design a bridge out of Q-tips, pipe cleaners, and string to hold up pumpkin candy. The goal is to hold the most candy! It will be a spook-tacular time! 

Week of October 23

We are finishing our skulls this week. They are coming along nicely! We learned many of the bones and why the skull is so important. Did you know that we have holes all throughout our skull called foramina? We also have a really amazing part of the skull called the sella turcica, which is like a saddle that holds our pituitary gland! Amazing! 

Week of October 16

Welcome back from fall break! We are joining forces with Maestra Iturralde to create a project for dia de los muertos. Each class will be labeling a few bones of the skull and turning it into art! We will color them and add glitter. It will be a fun way to be creative while learning some anatomy! 

Week of October 2

We are continuing to learn systems. This week we are observing the pattern of motion of cups with pennies. How can we move the penny to make the cup change direction? 

Week of September 11

This week we are learning about our sense of smell. We will be doing a variety of activities to explore what different smells are, how our nose works, and we will chart good smells vs bad smells!

Last week we learned about apples!

Week of September 4

Happy September! This week we are moving away from rainbows and diving into apples and trees! The students will get to look at different cut pieces and explore the seeds, use the apples for stamping, and build their own apple trees out of red cotton balls and sticks. It will be a fun week!

We made foaming rainbows last week!

Week of August 28

This week we will be continuing with color by learning about how rainbows are made - prisms! Students will make a foaming rainbow.

Last week we enjoyed mixing colors!

Week of August 21

Welcome to lower school science! This week we will be learning about color! I will read: What makes a Rainbow? I will show that rainbows need water! Water drops are prisms! So exciting!
