First Grade

Week of January 8

This week we will be starting our investigation about weather. We will create a weather chart and learn about what meteorologists study.

Week of December 18

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Have a wonderful break!

Week of December 4

This week we will learn about air in water. Our question is: How can see see that air takes up space? We will be doing a variety of activities using water and syringes  to explore this question.

Exploring air pressure and compression.

Week of November 27

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!

This week we will be wrapping up our parachute exploration. We will then move into air pressure and compression. Students will use syringes and tubes to try and get air from a big area to a little area.

Week of November 13

This week we will continue to learn about air. Students will use straws to blow air on a variety of objects to see how they react. We will also make parachutes to drop indoors and outdoors.

Week of November 7

Welcome to the second trimester! We are starting Earth Science. This week we will be learning about air and how we can use air to move things - air pressure!  We will be making rocket balloons!

Week of October 2

We are moving to a new investigation - light and shadows. Each student will be provided a flashlight to explore shadows with. What makes a shadow, and what is needed to see them? Hint: light source!

Week of September 25

This week we are continuing to work with sound. Our question is: How does sound travel from the source to the receiver? We will be making a spoon-gong system to explore this question.

Last week we explored high and low pitch.

Week of September 18

This week we are exploring pitch. Students will use xylophones and kalimbas to hear the difference of high and low pitch sounds. What allows for this change? What do the parts of each instrument have in common that make high pitch sounds and low pitch sounds?

Last week we explored volume:

Week of September 4

Happy September! This week we will be continuing to explore sound. Why do they sometimes sound low and sometimes high, and what does that mean to the vibrations? Hint: short vs. long waves! We will also be going outside to listen carefully for sounds.

Last week students had fun with our sound game and tuning forks!

Week of August 28

This week we are continuing with sound. We learned that in order to hear sound there needs to be vibration. Vibration = sound! We will be playing a sound game. The students will be dropping a variety of items on their table, and their partner has to guess what the item is. Why do different items make different sounds?

Last week students enjoyed exploring the vibration from sound!

Week of August 21

Welcome to lower school science! This trimester, we will be studying Sound and Light. We will start with asking: What is sound? The students will explore making sounds using rubber bands. What happens to the bands when they are plucked? Why does it vibrate? What happens to the sound when the vibration stops? What happens to the vibration when the sound is loud vs. soft?
